In Construction?

Don't have a Drug Testing Program?

Many non-federally regulated employers understand drug and alcohol testing to be an important part of their business. However, beyond pre-employment and post-incident testing, random drug testing is dismissed for a number of reasons. Why is this?

con4Drug and alcohol use in the Construction Industry is not only irresponsible; it is dangerous. In 2016, Oregon had 61 people die on the job last year. With 35% of fatalities (nationwide average) substance abuse was a factor - and it's even higher in the construction industry! Take that to the latest Oregon fatalities - potentially 22 people died due to drugs or alcohol.

The cost of replacing an employee can range from 25% to 200% of their annual compensation. Add to this cost the additional legal and financial liabilities attached to a dismissal that is associated with drug use or a workplace injury. If you could significantly reduce your turn-over and risk liabilities, would it be worth it investigate whether a random drug and alcohol testing program could be beneficial to your business?

Construction companies need to create an atmosphere where, at every level, there is a desire to employ staff who will keep the workplace safe.

An effective drug testing program promotes a safe, productive workplace in addition to a multitude of other benefits. Many companies decide to internally manage their drug testing program, but the hidden costs of doing so are high.

Getting Started
  • • First, you need to create a legal drug and alcohol policy that meets state and federal regulations
    • • This includes figuring out what type of drug test makes sense for your business (urine, oral saliva, or hair testing), and
    • • Figuring out what the disciplinary actions should be when an employee receives a positive drug test
  • • Second, decide if you would prefer drug tests on work site or off-site at a testing clinic. If you have multiple locations, how do you plan on growing this list of testing sites?
  • • Third, train your managers on Reasonable Suspicion Training so they can help prevent any serious injuries or accidents before they happen and to help the employee.
  • • Fourth, educate your employees and staff on why these changes are taking place and what the expectations are moving forward.
